Norway Spruce
(Picea Abies)

Height: 40' to 60' high by 25' to 30' wide
Hardiness Zones: 3b (-35 to -25)
Type: narrow-leaved evergreen tree
Annual Growth Rate: more than 18 inches
Disease and Insects: Susceptible to red spider, spruce gall aphid, budworm and borers
Culture: Transplant balled and burlaped in large sizes; move readily because of shallow, spreading root system; perfprms best in moderately moist, sandy, acid, will-drained soils but can be planted.

Comments: Norway Spruce can grow 80 to 100 feet tall and spread 25 to 35 feet but it is usually smaller in landscape situations. Many cultivars are shrub-like. Norway Spruce is a pyramidal tree with graceful, drooping branchlets and lustrous, dark green foliage at maturity. The long cones provide additional interest.

Landscape Value: Commonly used as a windbreak, shelters or as a temporary specimen; this species is overplanted and serbian spruce or oriental spruce should be considered as an alternative.
